500 Games - 1 Year - #3 Kingdomino

Day 3 and Game 3 of the '500 Games in One Year' Challenge and I reach for a game I got as a gift this Xmas (on request that is!).  I had heard many good things about 'Kingdomino', mainly whilst searching for accessible, fun to play family titles. And those suggestions certainly have not let me down...Between the physical version and the version on Board Game Arena I have already racked up quite a few plays.

As the name may suggest Kingdomino is based around a set of dominos, each of which show 1-2 different types of terrain. Players must make a 5 x5 grid (as seen below) with points being scored based on how well you have made your Kingdom. As you can see there are five different types of terrain and when playing your dominoes you must match at least one type of terrain. You score points by racking up masses of touching terrains, based on the number of crowns you woulds find in them.

One of the fun mechanics in the game comes in how player order and dominoes draw is decided. Essentially each turn 4 new dominoes are laid out and you chose which you want. This will determine the play order and choice order of the next turn, meaning if you go for the valuable dominoes you see in slot 4 on one turn, your choice will be very limited for the next few turns to come.

I would recommend this game for anyone, especially families looking for something with a bit of strategy to play together. My daughter is 4 and was able to play this and score well and I think that's probably about the youngest you want to start at!

An essential title for any collection!
