Blytz Review
‘Blytz’ is a 2024 war theme card game that has recently been
published by Zatu Games. Its aimed at 2-5 players and I would say due to the calculations
of HP needed and the element of strategy involved, then you are probably
looking at a game for ages 8+.
The game is themed around war/world domination and your
missions is to use your cards to acquire 3 countries from 3 different
continents. You do this through means of drawing, attacking and defending. Gameplay is fast, frantic, tactical and fun,
with a heavy element of betrayal and trying to stop your opponents achieving their
goals and well as striving for your own!
The game has a very simple set up, two piles of cards
(barracks and countries), draw 5 and begin. On your turn you will be taking 4
actions – drawing a country, fortifying a country with troops, using your
special cards and attacking other players nations. As you learn the game in
more depth you will be combo-ing these to maximise results and the game does
allow a lot of opportunity for forward planning as you seek to conquer the
countries you need to complete the winning conditions.
The attacking and defending is based on the Standard Hit
points calculator, but when you chose to fortify your countries you do it with
cards faced down, so there is always that risk/reward element when you decide
to attack as you gauge whether or not you think you have the strongest army!
Throw into the mix Special Ops cards which can change the
course of the round, and indeed the game, and you will find ‘Blytz’ provides
and overall fun experience.
In essence, whilst ‘Blytz’ doesn’t do anything new, it
combines some classic gameplay mechanics for other games and produces an engaging
title. It serves as a great ‘end of the night’ card game as well as a good game
for introducing younger players to the idea of Hit Points, Battles and Card
Battling games.
Certainly worth a look, and I imagine a game that’s going to
get a lot of play on our travels this summer!
