500 Games - 1 Year - Allie-Gator Review
‘Allie Gator’ is part of the Kosmos ‘Open and Play’ range,
and the third such game I have played on my quest to play 500 Games in 2024
(the others being ‘Dirty Pig’ and the fantastic ‘Monster 12’). These card games
are all designed to be portable games, with simple mechanics in which the box
also usually plays a key part of the game.
The aim of ‘Allie Gator’ is quite simple – on every turn you
are aiming to play a card that lies between two values on displays. The way the
game plays out gave me something of as ‘6nimmit’ start kit vibe as you have to
keep one eye on your hand management as well as deciding what to play.
The game contains 100 cards, numbered 1-100, as well as a
selection of special cards which will aid you when you are unable to play. The
game is very simple to play, but very compelling – Two cards are played from
the outset in two rows and the initial plays are laying down cards below them
that are lower. This will then give you a range and all cards played must fall
in that range (unless you have a special card). A bit like with ‘6nimmit’ you
are aiming to avoid taking cards, as if you are unable to play at any point in
the game you must take one of the two piles (indicated by a crocodile token).
Every card you take, as well as any special card you use in
the main game counts a minus point and the person with the fewest minus points wins
the round. First to win three rounds is the overall winner.
Overall, I would highly recommend ‘Allie Gator’ and although
the age on the box says 8+, my 4 year old can do this quite easily and only really
needs to the special cards explained. It’s a fun family title, portable, easy
to learn and endless fun. There is a bit of strategy to it as well for older
gamers.
Certainly worth a look!
